Skim coating

This week’s construction project was to skim coat and paint a kitchen wall. I applied 2 coats of joint compound to the wall. Allowed the wall 2-3 hours drying time between coats. The following day I sanded and applied 2 coats of finish paint (Farrow & Ball Eco-Friendly paint – “Down Pipe” eggshell) to the wall. While sanding the area was adequately sealed using plastic drop clothes to limit any dust from getting through the client’s apartment.

Baby Dresser

A custom built baby dresser for a soon to-be Mom. Materials used: birch plywood, benjamin moore semi-gloss paint, edge tape to finish rough edges of plywood, satin poly for top, 3/4″ dowel for curtain rod.

Headboard

This headboard was upholstered by a client. I was responsible to cut and prepare the 1/2″ MDF.

Mold removal and repainting

This week I had to deal with a severe case of mold in a clients bathroom. I used Clorox and detergent to wash the mold off the walls and ceilings in the bathroom (1/2 cup Clorox and 1/2 cup detergent to 1 gallon water). I used a spray bottle to apply the mixture to the walls and a sponge to scrub the mold off. After the surfaces were thoroughly washed with clean water and allowed to dry. The Clorox/detergent application may have to be repeated multiple times to scrub all the mold out. (a more expensive antimeldew solution can be used), but I find that this application worked just as well. Please wear a mask and rubber or latex gloves when doing this procedure.

Before priming or painting, all surfaces should be completely dried. Light sparkling may be required.

I used the above M-1 mildewcide in both the primer and paint. The M-1 mildewcide can be picked up at your local hardware store. I purchased all my paint and supplies for this project at Janovic. Each bottle of M-1 treats one gallon of paint/primer.

Elfa Closet Installation – Storage

This week I worked on a two closet Elfa (storage) closet installation. The old existing shelves were demo’d. Afterwhich the walls had to be skim coated (smoothed out by plastering) with two coats of joint compound as per the clients request. The apartment was protected using plastic drop clothes to keep the dust down while I sanded the closet walls. The actual installation of the Elfa closets in both closets took 6-7 hours. Project was completed within four days. End result: clients are quite happy with closet installation :) .

Tools/Materials Used for skim coating the closet walls:

Compound

Plaster of Paris (used as an additive to make the compound dry faster if needed)

6″ putty knife

10 – 12″ putty knife

150 Grit sandpaper

Dusk Mask

Plastic Drop Cloth

Tools/Materials Used for closet installation:

Hammer Drill (Pre War Building the plaster was a bit hard to drill through with a regular drill, hammer drill is recommended)

Anchors (supplied by the Container Store)

Hammer (used to drive the anchors into the wall)

1/8″ Drill bit (to create a pilot hole, also used to figure out if the wall is hallow or there’s a stud)

3/8″ drill bit (to make actual holes for achors)

Measuring Tape or Spacer(which Container Store sells) to measure out the vertical standards

Cat Litter Box

This cat litter box was a custom build in an existing kitchen cabinet. The litter box was built using birch plywood, the edges were finished with poplar. This project was completed in a day and half. The dimensions had to be altered because the valve would be an obstruction. Box was finished painted using Benjamin Moore high gloss white paint.

Counter build at Bryant Park Holiday Market

Images of a counter build for a client (Taste of Italy) who will be a vendor at the holiday booths in Bryant Park, NY, starting Friday 6th, November through January 3rd.  I also worked on setting up 2 additional booths for another client at Bryant Park earlier this week, she will be selling handmade handbags and holiday spinners.

For more efficiency I had the wood cut down to size at Dykes Lumber on 44th and 9th. Door and lift were installed using European style hinges (inset). Project was delayed temporarily because I ran out of hinges and Home Depot on 23rd Street for whatever reason claimed that they do not carry inset European hinges which is what I needed to complete the project last night :( . First thing this morning revisited Dykes and found my inset hinge and completed the project. As always client is happy.
